Rep. Jim Walsh discusses recent passage of bill that threatens parental rights

Rep. Jim Walsh, R-Aberdeen, speaks from House galleries immediately after the passage of Senate Bill 5599. The measure would allow youth-related facilities to withhold the whereabouts of runaway children from their parents.

Under the bill, children could stay at licensed youth shelters or host homes without their parent’s knowledge for an indefinite amount of time while seeking “protected health services” like gender-transitioning services and medications ― including puberty “blockers” that can lead to permanent sterilization.

SB 5599 passed with a vote of 57-39, 2 excused.
