Rep. Jim Walsh issues statement on passage of comprehensive sex education bill

Rep. Jim Walsh, R-Aberdeen, released the following statement regarding the recent passage of the comprehensive sex education bill, Senate Bill 5395:

“The public's reaction to comprehensive sex education for K-12 public schools in the state of Washington is unprecedented. It's only been a few days since the Democratic-controlled House approved the bill, and I'm still receiving hundreds of emails and phone calls every day.

“Parents don't merely object to the content of the curriculum, but the shift away from local control over what students study. Under this measure, state bureaucrats would determine the standards of sexual health education—not local school boards.

“In the wake of this bill, parents across the state are fighting for their children, schools and communities. That's a good thing.

“What's next? The bill goes to the Senate where they must agree with the changes that the House made to the bill, before heading to the governor's desk for signature.

“I encourage parents who object to call the Legislative Hotline at 1-800-562-6000 and/or contact the governor's office to make their voices heard.”

The 2020 legislative session is scheduled to end on March 12.
